My Interpretation of music

Posted by Soundshifter - November 11th, 2008

So why is my music so... different? It doesn't sound like music. Well yes it does. The way I see music is simple. Music is auditory thought. Thoughts first exist in your head as thought and when transcribed into words they exist as a story, a journal, or a poem. But when converted into sound they exist as MUSIC.

The way I make my music is very abstract and unorthodox. I write the very first thing that comes to mind whereas many producers would look for a long time for the right sound. And then I write the next thing and the next thing and the next thing consecutively. This is because these thoughts are being felt in the here and now and must be converted into sound because music is my true diary. Every feeling I've ever had can be felt and heard in my music. And it's because of this first-thought-that-comes-to-mind-will-
be-recorded process that my music sounds a bit strange at times.

Music has no obligation whatsoever to having a good beat or a catchy riff. It has an obligation to promote thinking, express thought, and to be analyzed. Music doesn't make you dance. Rhythm does. Music makes you feel. And if there's a song you say sounds "weird" because it "doesn't have a melody" then it's definitely making you feel something even if you don't like it.

Music is not to be liked or disliked. It's to be taken in and accepted.

I use a lot of voice overs because I like to give messages that way and it gives you a reason to hang on to the song. I also write in fragments frequently because thoughts are usually like this. And all music is, is auditory thought.

I believe the best genre for this type of writing is electronic because of the ability to manipulate sound without any rules. Thus causing a very, very wide horizon of complex sounds to create and to better portray your thought.

Think clearly and enjoy the programming.

wow what an amazing analyse! However i don't think your music is weird. If you want weird listen to some King crimson!

thanks. and i do listen to king crimson. i have their first album on record. very good stuff

That's a great way to think of music. It makes alot of sense when you think of how much influence music can have on the mind.

it really does. thanks for reading neon. remeber though, this is my philosophy and it works well for me. some people may not agree and that is ok. they probably have another philosophy on music and it works for them.
